This refined antique French folding pocket knife features a hand-carved mother-of-pearl handle with decorative rosette pins and gilt-capped ends, paired with a solid silver blade. A fine example of 19th-century French craftsmanship, it reflects both elegance and practicality.
Maker: Marked T.J.M, a Parisian silversmith active during the 1838–1864 period
Silver: French 1st standard (.950 sterling silver), signified by the boar’s head hallmark
Very good antique condition. The blade folds smoothly, the mother-of-pearl retains its iridescence, and the hallmarks are clear and well-struck. One of the scales has a crack, as shown in the close-up image but the handle is solid and firm. The knife is 20.5cm in length when open which is significantly bigger than English pocket knives of the period.
Unlike their English counterparts, which were often hallmarked in Sheffield or Birmingham, French mother-of-pearl knives were frequently made to higher silver standards (.950 vs .925 sterling). They were popular as luxury accessories for well-to-do gentlemen and ladies, often used as fruit knives or for letter opening. These knives were also prized souvenirs from Paris, making them cherished keepsakes across Europe.
The piece showcases the refinement of French silversmithing. Its combination of gilt accents, iridescent pearl, and high-grade silver makes it a superb collector’s piece. Such French knives were particularly rare which is why they command a high value in the market.
