The hand-carved handle is high quality mother of pearl which almost certainly would have been carved from Australian pearl shell which were exported to England from the 1800s. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe hallmarks are somewhat rounded but clear enough to read and confirm its date, maker and that it is genuine sterling silver; not silver-plate or stainless steel which are obviously significantly cheaper. As the blade is solid silver, which is softer than stainless steel, it cannot be used on hard objects. Such pocket knives would often be carried to cut and peel fruit which is why they are sometime called fruit knives. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe action is nice and tight and the blade almost straight with the handle when open and flush when closed. The blade is heavily scratched as is shown in the close up images and has been discounted accordingly.
