19th Century Bethlehem Mother-of-Pearl Carving of The Annunciation

A finely carved 19th century mother-of-pearl devotional plaque crafted in Palestine, most likely in the renowned pilgrimage workshops of Bethlehem.

Beautifully executed in pearl shell, the plaque depicts The Annunciation, showing the Archangel Gabriel appearing before the Virgin Mary. The scene is delicately engraved and enhanced with hand-coloured details, while the surrounding border features geometric ornament and decorative stars. The inscription "Annuntiatio B. Maria V." refers to the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Throughout the 19th century, Bethlehem became famous for producing intricately carved mother-of-pearl religious objects for pilgrims visiting the Holy Land. These devotional works were treasured as souvenirs and expressions of faith, combining exceptional craftsmanship with the natural iridescence of pearl shell.

An attractive and historically significant example of Palestinian mother-of-pearl carving, ideal for collectors of religious art, Holy Land artefacts, and antique devotional objects.

Condition Displays age-related wear consistent with its age, including minor surface marks and natural variations in the shell. The carving remains crisp and displays beautifully.
