19th Century Bethlehem Mother-of-Pearl Nativity Plaque

A beautifully carved 19th century mother-of-pearl devotional plaque from Bethlehem, Palestine, depicting the Nativity of Christ.

Finely executed in pearl shell, the central scene portrays the Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus, accompanied by Saint Joseph, a shepherd, and the traditional stable animals. The detailed relief carving is framed by an intricate openwork border of floral and foliate motifs, showcasing the remarkable craftsmanship for which Bethlehem's mother-of-pearl workshops became renowned during the nineteenth century.

The plaque bears the inscription "Bethlehem" and was produced as a high-quality pilgrim souvenir for visitors to the Holy Land. Objects such as these were treasured by travellers and religious collectors alike, representing both devotional significance and the exceptional artistry of Palestinian shell carving traditions.

The natural iridescence of the mother-of-pearl lends depth and warmth to the scene, while the finely pierced border creates an elegant lace-like effect. An outstanding example of Holy Land craftsmanship and a highly decorative display piece.

Condition Good antique condition consistent with age. Minor signs of wear and natural variations in the shell are present. The carving remains crisp and highly detailed with attractive natural lustre throughout.
