A Qing Dynasty (Late 1800s) Hand-Carved Pearl Shell. With stand.

The piece is made from an Australian Pinctada maxima pearl shell which would have been fished sometime in the late 1800s. The shell presents as 20cm x 18cm measured as presented on a diagonal axis on the stand. The shell would have been much larger but has been polished back to a shell of pure mother-of-pearl.

The shell has been traded to China where it has been hand-carved; likely between 1880 and 1920. The artwork depicts village life typical of the shell carvings of the era. The Chinese carvers were the best in the world and the craftsmanship of this piece is excellent by modern standards. However, it not at the same level as some of the true masters of the art, examples of which are shown on this website. Perhaps it was produced by someone earlier in their carving career.

The shell comes with a new metal stand as shown in the images.
