Anglo-Indian Carved Sandlewood Jewellery Box

An exceptional 19th century Anglo-Indian jewellery box, finely crafted from richly patinated sandalwood and lavishly decorated with intricate carved panels and geometric Sadeli mosaic inlay.

The box features deeply carved scenes of stylised animals, foliage and floral rosettes across the lid and sides, framed by bands of delicate micro-mosaic inlay typical of the finest Indian workshops producing luxury objects for the colonial export market. The raised central panel is similarly adorned with carvings and intricate decorative borders, creating a striking architectural form.

Opening to reveal a spacious interior lined in deep blue fabric, the box offers practical storage while serving as a remarkable decorative object. The craftsmanship displayed throughout, from the detailed relief carving to the painstaking inlay work, reflects the high standard of Anglo-Indian decorative arts during the late 19th century.

A beautiful and highly collectible example of Anglo-Indian cabinetmaking, ideal as a jewellery box, keepsake box, or statement piece for a desk, library or collector's cabinet.
