Black Pearl Shell Serving Plate Set. 19th Century.

Hand carved from the shell of the Pinctada margaritifera (Black-Lipped Pearl Oyster), this charming set of four French mother-of-pearl dishes depicts a traditional French fisherman. Produced in the coastal towns of France during the 19th century, carvings such as these were popular souvenirs purchased by visitors and reflected the exceptional craftsmanship of local artisans.

During the mid to late 19th century, French workshops commonly used pearl shell imported from overseas territories, where large pearl fisheries supplied the raw material for decorative objects such as these. The luminous interior of the shell provided an ideal canvas for intricate carving, resulting in pieces that were both decorative and functional.

The largest shell measures approximately 11 cm in diameter, while the smallest measures 8 cm. They are ideally suited as serving dishes for pâté, cheese, olives or other small delicacies, while also making striking decorative pieces.

All four shells retain their original periostracum—the natural outer layer that protected the oyster during its life. This feature is not always preserved and adds to the authenticity and character of the set.

Two shells display age-related hairline cracks. One has a deeper crack and a small loss to the edge; while it remains structurally stable, it has been included with the set at no additional cost. The remaining three shells are in very good antique condition.
