Description

A fine English antique button hook by William Needham, dating to 1908, with a sterling silver hook and carved mother-of-pearl handle. An elegant and particularly well-preserved example of this once-essential personal accessory.

The beautifully figured mother-of-pearl has an attractive natural iridescence, while the folding hook is solid sterling silver rather than the more commonly encountered steel. The silver retains clear hallmarks confirming the maker and date.

Button hooks were widely used during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods to fasten the numerous small buttons found on gloves, boots and clothing. Compact folding examples such as this could be conveniently carried among other personal accessories.

The folding action remains firm, with the hook sitting straight when open and neatly against the handle when closed. Both the mother-of-pearl and silver are in very good condition.
