French Ebony and Silver Knife Set. Circa 1830-50. Cased.

An exceptional and rare early 19th century French dessert knife set. The set comprises twelve finely balanced and similar dessert knives housed in an original fitted presentation box with rich crimson silk and velvet lining. Each knife approximately 19cm in length and feature beautifully polished ebony handles accented with silver shield cartouches and silver mounts. Two knives have the prestigious BARON Coutelier du Roi maker’s mark and hallmarks.

The blades are French first standard silver (95% silver) which is actually a higher purity than the English Sterling Silver (92.5%). These are obviously much more valuable than silver-plate, stainless-steel or chrome.

The deep black ebony contrasts beautifully against the silver, creating a timeless and sophisticated aesthetic associated with aristocratic French dining culture. Ebony wood is rare and highly prized. It was imported into Europe from Africa and Asia for luxury goods as it was considered one of the most beautiful and expensive woods available. It is rarely used in goods today because the trees takes decades, sometimes over a century, to mature.

Good antique condition consistent with age and careful use. The blades retain a soft aged sheen with light surface wear and fine scratches commensurate with nearly two centuries of history. Several ebony handles display stable age-related hairlines and natural wear typical of antique ebony pieces. The original case shows age wear, scuffs, and some deterioration to the silk pull ribbon and exterior, all contributing to its authentic antique character.

Their restrained neoclassical form and exquisite proportions make them equally suitable for collectors, formal table settings, or decorative display.
