An extraordinary antique French cutlery set dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, featuring richly toned ebony handles adorned with delicate celestial-style inlay work. The knives are large at 25cm in length.

The set captures the romance and craftsmanship of Belle Époque tableware, with each piece displaying tiny stars, moons, floral motifs, and iridescent decorative details carefully embedded into the dark wood handles. The centre diamond-shaped motif in mother of pearl.

Ebony wood is rare and highly prized. It was imported into Europe from Africa and Asia for luxury goods as it was considered one of the most beautiful and expensive woods available. It is rarely used in goods today because the trees takes decades, sometimes over a century, to mature.

The set is in good antique condition with age-appropriate wear consistent with use and history. Light surface scratches on the blades. The ebony handles display minor age marks and variations, adding to the authentic antique charm. A few of the hanldes have wood cracks but all are structurally sound and the blades firm in the handles.
