Antique Indian Horn-Handled Knife. Silver Sheath. Circa 1900.

A striking and finely made antique Indian knife dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, featuring a beautifully shaped natural horn handle and an elaborately decorated silver sheath. The handle was described as rhinoceros in the estate but this is unlikely given that the material was seldom used. It is most likely water buffalo horn. It has a rich warm tone and elegant curvature that fits comfortably in the hand. It is mounted with a flared metal ferrule.

The blade is hand-forged steel with a deep, aged patina and visible forging texture, typical of traditional Indian workmanship. The knife remains shows honest wear consistent with age.

The sheath is the standout feature: a cylindrical silver scabbard decorated in high-relief repoussé floral and foliate panels, entirely hand worked. Indian silver of this period is often unmarked, and while no hallmarks are present, the craftsmanship and weight suggest solid silver or a high-grade silver alloy.

Pieces of this type were commonly produced in India during the British Raj period for officers, travelers, and the export market, combining local craftsmanship with forms appealing to European tastes.
