Description

A fine English antique pocket knife by William Needham of Sheffield, dating to circa 1900, with a sterling silver blade and mother-of-pearl handle.

The beautifully figured mother-of-pearl has a rich natural iridescence and is inset with a vacant sterling silver cartouche, originally intended for the owner's initials. The folding silver blade is finely formed and retains clear English hallmarks, including the maker's mark for William Needham.

The date letter is somewhat rubbed and appears to be either f for 1898 or t for 1911, placing the knife around the turn of the 20th century.

Silver-bladed fruit and pocket knives were fashionable personal accessories in Britain during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Silver was particularly suited to cutting fruit as it resisted the corrosive effects of acidic juices, while the folding form allowed the knife to be conveniently carried.

The knife is in very good condition, with a straight, clean blade and firm folding action. The mother-of-pearl is also very well preserved, retaining its attractive natural lustre.
