Description

A fine English antique pocket knife by George Unite, dating to the 19th century, with a sterling silver blade and finely carved mother-of-pearl handle.

The beautifully figured mother-of-pearl is particularly attractive, with carved detailing and a rich natural iridescence. A vacant sterling silver cartouche is inset into the handle and could be personalised with the owner's initials.

The hallmarks have some wear, although the George Unite maker's mark remains clearly identifiable and the surviving marks confirm the blade as sterling silver. The precise date mark is no longer sufficiently clear to date the knife more closely.

Silver-bladed fruit and pocket knives were fashionable personal accessories during the Victorian period. Silver was particularly suited to cutting fruit because it resisted the corrosive effects of acidic juices, while the folding form allowed the knife to be conveniently carried.

The knife retains a firm folding action, with the blade sitting straight when open and flush when closed. At 14.5 cm when open, it is a relatively substantial example. The blade has some minor surface blemishes and a slight bend towards the tip, reflected in the price.
