Description
A fine English antique pocket knife by Hilliard & Thomason, dating to 1859, with a sterling silver blade and carved mother-of-pearl handle.
The beautifully figured mother-of-pearl displays an attractive natural iridescence, while the folding blade is solid sterling silver. The well-defined English hallmarks confirm the maker, silver standard and date.
Silver-bladed fruit and pocket knives were fashionable personal accessories during the Victorian period. Silver was particularly suited to cutting fruit because it resisted the corrosive effects of acidic juices, while the folding form allowed the knife to be conveniently carried.
The knife retains a firm folding action, with the blade sitting straight when open and flush when closed. The blade has some very fine surface scratches, which are barely noticeable in normal viewing, together with a small indentation to the edge, as shown in the photographs.
