Antique Pocket Knife. 1906, Mother of Pearl and Sterling Silver.

Made by English Silversmith Allen & Darwin. An elegant and classic design. The hand-carved handle is high quality mother of pearl which almost certainly would have been carved from Australian pearl shell which were exported to England from the 1800s.

The hallmarks are somewhat rounded but clear enough to read and confirm its date, maker and that it is genuine sterling silver; not silver-plate or stainless steel which are obviously significantly cheaper. As the blade is solid silver, which is softer than stainless steel, it cannot be used on hard objects. Such pocket knives would often be carried to cut and peel fruit which is why they are sometime called fruit knives.

The action is nice and tight and the blade almost straight with the handle when open and flush when closed. The blade is heavily scratched as is shown in the close up images and has been discounted accordingly. The knife is 120mm in length when open and presents in very good condition when the blade is closed.

A wonderful piece of history and fits comfortably in your pocket for daily use. A lovely piece for collectors, enthusiasts or as a unique and meaningful gift.
