Description

A fine English antique pocket knife by William Needham, dating to 1925, with a sterling silver blade and carved mother-of-pearl handle. Particularly well preserved, it is an attractive smaller example of English pocket cutlery from the early 20th century.

The beautifully figured mother-of-pearl has a rich natural iridescence and is inset with a vacant sterling silver cartouche, originally intended for the owner's initials. The folding blade is solid sterling silver and retains clear English hallmarks confirming the maker and date.

Silver-bladed fruit and pocket knives were fashionable personal accessories during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Silver was particularly suited to cutting fruit as it resisted the corrosive effects of acidic juices, while the folding form allowed the knife to be conveniently carried.

The knife is in very good condition, with a firm folding action. The blade sits straight when open and flush when closed, while the mother-of-pearl is also particularly well preserved.
