Cutlery Set. Mother of Pearl and Silver Plate. Circa 1900.

The feature of this set is the finely engraved details on the knives and forks. The handles are hand-carved mother of pearl.

The metal is silver plate, which is more valuable than stainless steel or chrome but less valuable than sterling silver. The main draw-back of silver plate is that the light scratches which can be seen on the metal cannot be polished out. Whereas, as sterling silver is solid silver, it can be continually polished until all marks are removed. However, the advantage of silver plate is obviously that it is significantly more affordable than sterling silver.

All pieces are in good order with the blades firm in the handles. The metal has light scratches which is typical of silver plate and for a set produced approxiatemly one century ago. However, this set is in particularly good condition and probably hasn't been used much in the last century.

The knives are 18cm. The forks 14.5cm.

A wonderful piece of history and will be an interesting addition to any table setting. A lovely gift for anyone or for any special occasion.
