Sterling Silver Vesta, Engraved 'Havana'

A rare Victorian sterling silver vesta case. The makers hallmarks cannot be read but likely by William Neale, circa 1890. Elegant, practical and richly evocative of the late Victorian smoking culture, this is a particularly appealing example of one of the nineteenth century's most iconic gentleman's accessories.

Before the invention of disposable lighters, vesta cases were carried to protect strike-anywhere matches from moisture while keeping them readily available. The serrated edge along the base provided the striking surface, allowing a match to be lit wherever it was needed. They were commonly carried alongside pocket watches, pocket knives and cigar cutters by well-dressed gentlemen throughout Britain and Europe.

This example remains in excellent antique condition with a crisp hinged lid that closes firmly and aligns perfectly. The attractive engraving, reading "Havana," gives the piece particular character and suggests an association with fine cigars and the celebrated Cuban tobacco trade.

Measuring approximately 43 × 34 × 11 mm, it is an ideal collector's piece while also making a distinctive display object for a desk, study, drinks cabinet or cigar collection.
