Description

A charming French Colonial Vietnamese mother-of-pearl inlaid box, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. Constructed in hardwood and extensively veneered with engraved mother-of-pearl panels, the box displays the sophisticated craftsmanship for which Vietnamese artisans became renowned during the colonial period.

The lid is centred with a large oval reserve depicting a Vietnamese courtyard scene with figures, traditional buildings, tiled terraces and ornamental trees, all finely engraved and enhanced by the natural iridescence of the shell. Decorative geometric borders frame the central scene, while smaller engraved shell panels to the sides portray landscapes, architectural features and garden motifs inspired by traditional Vietnamese design.

The mother-of-pearl exhibits beautiful flashes of silver, green, pink and blue, creating a striking contrast against the warm patina of the hardwood. Throughout the French Colonial period, such boxes were produced as luxury decorative items and souvenirs, combining traditional Vietnamese artistry with forms favoured by European collectors and residents.

Originally intended for the storage of gaming counters, jewellery, correspondence or personal keepsakes, the box remains both decorative and practical today.

Origin: Vietnam
