Large and Rare Museum-Grade Qing Dynasty (early 1800s) Hand-Carved Pearl Shell. With stand.

One of the rarest pieces in the collection. A very fine antique pearl shell. The shell is 170mm high x 140mm accross. The diagonal measurement is 195mm. The shell would have been much larger but has been polished back to a shell of pure mother-of-pearl.

The shell has been traded to China where it has been hand-carved in the early 1800s. The Chinese carvers were the best in the world and this is a fine example of the very best of their craftsmen. The artwork depicts trading between islands and is boarded by mountians and trees.

My guess is that this would have been a month's work and you cannot find artisans with such skills today.

The shell comes with a new metal stand as shown in the images.
