Large Antique Goa Mother of Pearl Serving Dish. With Stand.

Shells have been used in the coastal state of Goa for as long as there has been human activity there. Goa is well known for its use of mother of pearl in windows rather than glass. Glass came to Goa as late as 1890 and remained an expensive material well into the 20th century. Regardless, the nacre of mother of pearl was preferred over glass as it allowed for a subdued filtered light to come into rooms of a house while affording privacy.

The use of shell gave rise to the produciton of a wide range of fine artifacts using mother of pearl; especially serving dishes and candle sticks. This is a fine example of such pieces and is typical of the beautiful and symetrical designs of the region and the skilled craftsmanship of the makers.

The dish is 22cm in diameter.
