Pocket Knife by Henry Atkins, 1876, England

A large English pocket knife by Henry Atkin, dating to 1876. Measuring 15.5 cm when open, it is generously proportioned for a knife of this type and has a pleasing sense of weight and presence in the hand.

The handle is formed from beautifully figured, hand-carved mother-of-pearl, almost certainly cut from Australian pearl shell exported to England during the nineteenth century. The silver fittings are clearly hallmarked and confirm that they are genuine sterling silver rather than silver plate.

The blade remains in very good condition, with a firm action and good alignment when open. When closed, the blade sits slightly ajar, as shown in the photographs. This has been reflected in the price. The vacant silver cartouche remains clean and could be personalised by a future owner.

An attractive and highly tactile example of Victorian English cutlery, combining sterling silver, natural mother-of-pearl and skilled craftsmanship. It would appeal to collectors of antique knives, English silver or mother-of-pearl objects, and would also make a distinctive and meaningful gift.
