A finely hand-carved Black Forest nutcracker dating to around 1900. Beautifully sculpted in the form of a dog's head, this charming piece showcases the exceptional craftsmanship for which the Black Forest workshops of southern Germany became renowned during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Black Forest woodcarving emerged during the seventeenth century and developed into one of Germany's most celebrated decorative arts. Characterised by finely carved animals, hunting subjects and naturalistic forms, these objects were both practical household items and works of art, highly prized by collectors today.

This nutcracker remains in very good antique condition and displays the rich patina that only develops with age. The carved details and robust mechanical action reflect the quality of its original manufacture.

Measuring approximately 19 cm in length, it is both a functional nutcracker and a highly decorative object that makes an attractive addition to a study, library, drinks cabinet or coffee table.
