Description
An attractive and substantial collection of 129 Qing Dynasty mother-of-pearl gaming counters, hand-carved in China during the mid-19th century for export to the European market. These counters were traditionally used for scoring and wagering in card games such as Whist, Quadrille, Ombre and other fashionable parlour games of the Georgian and Victorian periods.
The set comprises a variety of distinctive forms including rectangular, elongated, circular and fish-shaped counters, all meticulously engraved with foliate scrollwork, floral decoration and bird motifs. The fish counters are particularly charming, carved in high relief with scales and fins, while many of the round and rectangular examples feature doves or birds enclosed within decorative reserves surrounded by intricate scrolling foliage.
Each counter displays the beautiful natural iridescence of genuine mother-of-pearl, with subtle tones of silver, cream, pink and green visible across the surfaces. The reverse sides are engraved with traditional starburst diaper patterns, a characteristic feature of Chinese export gaming counters of the Qing period.
Sets of this quality were luxury items supplied to European merchants and wealthy households and remain highly sought after by collectors of Chinese Export art, gaming antiques and mother-of-pearl decorative objects.
