Qing Dynasty Hand-Carved Pearl Shell with Original Stand.

One of the rarest pieces in the collection. A very fine antique pearl shell which would have been fished from the Australian pearling grounds in the late 1800s. The shell is 22.5cm high x 22cm across. The shell would have been much larger but has been polished back to a shell of pure mother-of-pearl. The hand-carved wooden stand is 22cm in width, 16cm in height and 8 cm in depth. The overall height when the shell is on the stand is 34cm.

The shell has been traded to China where it has been hand-carved sometime in the late 1800s or very early 1900s. The Chinese carvers were the best in the world and this is a fine example of the very best of their craftsmen. The artwork depicts village life and is adorned by plants and butterflys.

My guess is that this would have been a month's work and you cannot find artisans with such skills today. The shell comes with a new metal stand.
