A superb set of opera glasses. Jacques LeMaire is credited as the inventor of the opera glass and produced some of the finest examples of this much sought-after theatre accessory.

Lemaire began making opera glasses in 1847. Prior to this opera glasses were little more than refracting lenses mounted in metal frames. LeMaire, an accomplished optician, created a sophisticated system of double convex lenses that allowed for greater magnification. His system quickly became the standard for opera glasses and it remains the basis for most modern designs.

Today, antique opera glasses are highly sought after by collectors and LeMaires name is still associated with quality and craftsmanship. Examples in such good condition are rare. The lenses are clear and the focus is sharp.
