Description

An elegant French set of twelve table knives by L. Lapar, dating to around the turn of the 20th century.

Each knife has a polished steel blade, signed “L. Lapar”, fitted to a substantial mother-of-pearl handle with silver ferrule and terminal fittings. The handles are further embellished with applied silver shield-shaped cartouches, each engraved with an intertwined monogram.

The mother of pearl varies naturally from knife to knife, giving the set considerable visual character. The stepped silver fittings provide a restrained architectural detail typical of fine French tableware of the period.

A particularly attractive surviving service, combining the lustre of mother of pearl with silver-mounted handles and finely shaped steel blades.

France, circa 1900.

Dimensions: approximately 27 cm long each.
Set: 12 knives.
Materials: steel, mother of pearl and silver.
Maker: L. Lapar, blades signed.

Condition is particulary good for a set of this age. The blade are firm and straight in the handles with excellent edges. The mother of pearl is of the highest quality. A fine set.
