Description

A handsome English set of twelve butter knives dating to 1926, each combining a solid sterling silver blade with a beautifully figured mother-of-pearl handle.

The broad, rounded blades are individually struck with full English sterling silver hallmarks for 1926 together with the maker’s mark “W.H”. Each is mounted to a slim, gently tapering mother-of-pearl handle, the natural shell displaying attractive variations of silvery white, soft grey, green and pink iridescence.

The restrained design gives the set an elegant simplicity, allowing the quality of the materials to take prominence. The rounded, unsharpened blades are characteristic of butter knives intended for the dining table.

The knives are accompanied by their original fitted presentation case, with dark fitted interior and silk-lined lid.

The blade are in excellent condition and are straight and firm in the handles. Large and thick high quality mother of pearl handles which are seldom able to be produced today. A minor chip to the base of one of the handles but a fine set and ready for another century of use. The case shows some age-related wear, particularly to the interior lining.
