Vintage Mother of Pearl Butter Knives Set: Circa 1920s, Firth Stainless Steel, Sheffield England.

The high quality mother of pearl handles are the feature of this set. They are hand-carved from Australian pearl shell which were exported to England from the late 1800s.

The blades are stamped G.Creswick Sheffield and Firth Stainless. George Creswick was a Sheffield cutler (cutlery maker) active in the early–mid 20th century. Sheffield, England, was world-famous for its steel and cutlery production.

Firth Stainless: Refers to Thomas Firth & Sons, the Sheffield firm that pioneered “Staybrite” stainless steel in 1913, one of the earliest commercial stainless steels. Cutlers would often stamp “Firth Stainless” on blades made from this material, as it was a premium selling point at the time.

Since stainless steel cutlery was only commercially available after 1913, and Sheffield makers began widely using Firth stainless by the 1920s–1930s which is approximately when this set was made.

The blades are in excellent condition. All handles are solid and all blades firm in their handles.
